Evaluation of Antioxidant Properties of Ornamental Crabapple Fruits

Six cultivars of ornamental crabapple fruits were evaluated for antioxidant potential by several assays (DPPH, ABTS, FRAP) and tested for their total phenolic and flavonoid contents. The study demonstrates that Royalty and Strawberry Pariftt fruits have the stranger antioxidant activity ability. By comparison with flavonoids, total phenolics showed a higher correlation with the antioxidant capacity. It may be the main contributor to the antioxidant activity exhibited by the plants. The results obtained in this study clearly indicate that ornamental crabapple fruits have a significant potential to use as a natural antioxidant source.
