Effects of Glutathione on the Tolerance of Water Stress and Antioxidative Enzyme Activity in Cut Rose
Application of GSH and its biosynthetical inhibitor BSO on the tolerance to water stress and antioxidative enzyme in petals of cut rose Samantha were studied. Vase life of cut rose pre treated with water for 12h followed by 24h water stress decreased 53% compared with non-stress. 2 mM GSH pretreatment prolonged vase life significantly, increased markedly water potential during recovery, decreased dramatically MDA content all through the treatment. Contrary results were obtained in 2mM BSO pretreated flowers. The antioxidative enzyme activities of stress control increased with the beginning of stress and decreased with the severity of stress. After water recovery, the activities of antioxidative enzyme increased again and reduced with senescence. GSH pretreatment promoted the activities of GR, GPX, SOD and APX during stress and vasing, while decreased the content of MDA. The activities of GR, GPX, SOD were decreased by BSO pretreatment during stress. Activities of GR, GPX, SOD, POD, CAT and APX were lowered compared with stress control during water recovery. The results suggest that the effect of enhancement of GSH on tolerance to water deficit stress is related to the promotion of the antioxidant enzyme activities and the decrease in membrane lipid peroxidation.
