The Transmission Mechanism of Disaster Rumor and the Emergency Strategy

Combined with some relevant cases on disaster rumors, this paper analyses the characteristics and mechanism of disaster rumors transmission and the emergent response. It argues that people always tend to collectively explain the messages released from the authorities and the informal channels, and the disaster rumors are often produced in this process. The intensity of rumor transmission is not only positively related to the importance and ambiguity of the disaster messages, but also related to the ways that governments and the news media cope with disaster information. The strict control or loose control of the disaster information communication channel may lead to the circulating of rumors. The government should immediately respond to disaster rumors, ensuring the disaster information be issued accurately and transparently, enhancing the crisis communication and cooperation effectiveness among different sectors and departments.
