The Interrelationships among Stress, Resilience and Job Engagement among Civil Servants in the Chinese Tax System

The aim of this article is to understand the level of job engagement among civil servants in the Chinese tax system and to explore its association with specific stressors and resilience. 228 civil servants were tested with a stress questionnaire designed by the authors, the Ego Resilience Scale, and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES). The results showed that: (1) the scores for this group of workers on the UWES are higher than the middle level; (2) there are significant differences among individuals with different educational backgrounds and different administrative rankings; (3)resilience is significantly positive correlated with job engagement. Regression analysis demonstrated that resilience and organizational movement account for 23% of the variance of vigor; resilience, organizational movement and work tasks account for 30.2% of the variance of dedication; resilience, superior and organizational running account for 22.8% of the variance of absorption. Conclusion: The civil servants engagement has educational backgrounds and administrative rankings difference. Stressor and resilience influenced job engagement. Resilience was found to be a mediator between stressor and job engagement.
