Public-private partnership in Primary Health Service Delivery:Lessons from Bangladesh

The central aim of this paper is to explore the implications of public-private partnership in basic service delivery with special focus on the health sector in Bangladesh. In doing so, the paper first looks at why and how public-private partnership has become widespread in basic service provisioning, different modes and forms of public-private partnership and its current practices in the health sector in Bangladesh. It is argued here publicprivate partnership is not necessarily a magic-bullet for effective and efficient primary health service delivery. By comparing two different types of publicNGO partnership programmes in the primary health sector, this paper comes to a proposition whether such partnerships work, depends on various socioeconomic factors as well as institutional arrangements among the parties involved in it, which are very much contextual. Then it attempts to find out those factors that influence proper functioning of such partnerships.
