Effects of Ethylene and 1-MCP on Ethylene Releasing and Aromatic Compounds in Oriental Sweet Melons (Cucumis melo var. makuwa Makino)

The effects of ethylene and 1-methylcyclopropene (1MCP) on ethylene releasing and aromatic compounds in oriental sweet melon were studied. Melons were treated with 50, 100 and 200 ppm ethrel and 1 ppm 1MCP at 24, 29 and 34 day after anthesis. Head-space solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) was used to extract aromatic compounds from fruits, which were analyzed by using a gas chromatograph-mass spectrophotometer (GC-MS). The results indicated that ethylene releasing of melon was accelerated by spraying ethrel. The volatile compounds in treated melon increased with, ethrel concentration; the total aromatic compounds in 200ppm ethrel treated fruits accounted for 1.58 times than that in control. Six volatile esters, not exist in control fruits, were identified. Delayed ethrel application had no effect on aroma kinds and relative content. The total aromatic compounds accounted for 79 % of control in 1-MCP treated fruits. In addition, there were 6 kinds of characteristic aromatic esters in Yumeiren melon, the relative content of them accounted for more than 96.67% of the aromatic compounds. These results suggested that esters production was significantly affected by ethylene regulation in oriental sweet melons.
