Comparative Study on Polyphenols and Flavones Content and Antioxidant Activity of Flower Plants

Polyphenols and flavones content in 50% ethanol extract of 60 species of flower plants were determined and DPPH free radical-scavenging test was made. The results showed that: Flowers were good source of polyphenols and flavones, flowers in which polyphenols content was above 70mg/g included Paeonia laciflora Pall, Calendula arvensis, R.xanthina Lindl, R. pimpinellifoliascotch rose and Rosa rugosa Thunb. flowers with higher flavones content included Forsythia suspersa Vahlgolden bells, Zantedeschia aelhiopica, Crataegus pinnatifida Bge , P.armeniaca Land Prunus triloba Lindl.etc, Which ranged from 7.05 to 8.33 mg/g. Ethanol extract in different flowers showed different antioxidant activity. Among them, Rosa rugosa Thunb. had the highest activity( DPPH scavenging rate reached up to 74.37%) followed by Rosa chinensis Jacq., Paeonia suffruticosa Andr.and Tulipa gesneriana L; polyphenols and flavones content in bud period was found higher than that in bloom period based on the determination and analysis in different flowering periods, and the antioxidant activity in different flowering periods showed no regularity.
