Emergence Patterns and Evidence for a Female-produced Sex Pheromone of the Gall Midge, Obolodiplosis Robiniae (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) in Northern China

The emergence patterns of the gall midge, Obolodiplosis robiniae, were determined in the laboratory. Adults began emerging at the onset of the photophase. In the field, delta-shaped traps baited with 5 virgin females caught males at 1.2m from ground. Most males were captured. Gas chromatographic electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) analyses indicated the presence of an electrophysiologically active compound in pheromone gland extraction from virgin females. Studies are underway to elucidate the structures of the putative sex pheromone components in order to evaluate their application under field conditions.
