The Shan-shui City —An Ecological City with Chinese Characteristics
The 21st century can be regarded as an urban century. With the rapid development of Chinas urbanization process, cities have gradually lost their uniqueness because of the tendency to construct cities using similar design principles. In this article, traditional Chinese culture is advocated, (especially Qian Xuesens Shan-shui City concept), and explained from three aspects: the Natural State, the Picturesque State and the Ideal State. Based on these concepts, the paper advocates the Holistic Design approach and collaboration with other design disciplines. Three city scale projects -Beijing Olympic park, Tieling Fanhe New City and Tangshan Nanhu Eco-city - put this Shan-shui City concept into practice.
