Sustainable Urban Spaces Design Based on Preserving Remnant Patches:An Analysis of AB-o-ATASHEntrance Plaza in Tehran/Iran
The present paper aims to find the methodology of designing sustainable open urban spaces. At first, threats of nature that occurs because of population growth and unlimited urban development over the land are reviewed. It usually happens, even in open spaces like streets, squares and plazas, by covering the whole place by stones and bricks over layers of mortar and concrete as the bedding. Contemplating on these facts, one wonders how we can have sustainable citys open public plazas to lessen negative effects on environments. Due to the importance of Landscape Ecology and the emphases are left to the preservation of natural patches and corridors; one of the most important urban design considerations is to detect remnant patches or corridors within urban places. Preserving the natural properties of patches with consideration of human needs in urban places is analyzed as the integrative sustainable way to avoid expanding disturbed patches in the cities. As a case, ABBAS-ABAD HILLS development plan is introduced and AB-o-ATASH Entrance Plaza is analyzed. Regarding the nature of the project, the chosen design methodology is to preserve natural properties of site.
