The Governance Strategy of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage between Universal Value and Local Culture
This paper discusses the governance strategy of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage as an experimental method for sustainable development in mountain landscapes of world-renowned natural beauty and with high tourist pressure. The universal values as World Heritage Site are highlighted and the complex administrative framework of the Dolomite region (e.g. ownership, local government, economy) is examined. The principles, aims and structure of the strategy are discussed. The main focus of the paper is on the relation between the conservation of universal value for the future generations and the improvement of traditional models of territorial government. The main result is a more aware commitment by the local administrations to ensure the universal values of the region over time and a strong incentive to dwell upon the issues related to the mountain, such as cultural traditions, landscape diversity, natural heritage and sustainable development, with a new openness and willingness to discuss.
