Research on the Chinese Landscape Design Philosophy of Piling Hill
Piling hill skills continuously developed and improved in long history, and formed an extensive and profound art system. The specific background of history, culture and natural environment led to the formation of the Chinese Natural Landscape Garden, and defined the key role of piled hills in the Chinese Garden. Today, however, the Modern garden, as an internationally dominant tendency, impinges this traditional art. There are plenty of researches on piling hill, but few of them focus on the gardening skill. Based on the restoration designs of ancient gardens, the paper systematically illustrates the design philosophy of piling hill in 4 areas, that is: Site Investigation, Naming, Layout and Perfection . The results show that design of piling hill obeys no specific rules, but keeps to certain philosophies. The philosophies are the essence of piling hill design, which is handed down from ancient times to modern era.
