Path System Design of National Parks in Japan

The facilities in the parks are established to improve the accessibility and preservation of the national park; the path system especially is the fundamental facility to all parks, for the visitors to be close to and be part of the nature. The characteristics of the natural environment are what gives attraction to the national parks, therefore, it is very important and required for path designers to make the best use of what is already available at the sight, with minimal impact to the nature as he/she plans the routing of the path system. In this paper, it analyzes the history of trail design in Japan, and through discussion about the goal, approach and concept of design, and application of Japanese gardens plan technique to national parks, this paper gives a guideline for national parks path system design as followed: Set the routing of the path on the boarder of varying vegetation and/or geographical feature; Avoid straight path way, route the path along the geographical feature.; Install the design that matches to the surrounding environment; Uniformity to overall scenery.
