Didactic Catalog of Native Plants for Landscape Design
In landscape architecture, vegetation is a vital element in landscape construction. For historical and cultural reasons, however, in Mexico the use of exotic vegetation has been given almost single priority in most architectural landscape projects. From this fact it has derived that exotic vegetation is the one that is most commercially propagated and asked for. Thus, the architectural landscape educators are faced with an enormous challenge when trying to make a difference in selecting the vegetable material not only in terms of aesthetics but also in terms of sustainability. The use of exotic vegetation causes mainly two problems, the first has to do with water consumption and the second with reaffirming cultural identity. Considering this problematic situation, and being aware of the enormous environmental, economic and cultural costs that sticking to this model would imply, this didactic digital catalog has been conceived with a selection of 75 native species of the seasonally dry forests in Mexico. With this work, this paper intends to effect a change in the plant selecting model of the students by providing them with a practical tool that will raise their awareness concerning the responsibility as landscape architects.
