Citizen Education Programs at Awaji Landscape Planning & Horticulture Academy for the Improvement of the Landscape and the Environment
Hyogo prefecture in Japan has experienced The Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake in 1995. But this experience promoted the participation through such kind of volunteer activity. Awaji Landscape Planning & Horticulture Academy was established in 1999 by Hyogo prefecture with the University. This paper is going to report and analyze about the Mature Course which has produced more than 5000 graduates within 10 years and its purpose is to provide for leaders in community design who can contribute to the improvement of the landscape and the environment. When questioning the graduates, its received some interesting answers such as those following: The effects of dealing with greenery or nature in general were accordingly healing and refreshing for my mental health , empowering my physical body through the contact with plants , and beautifying the town while promoting the interaction of its people. Those graduates of the academy form an NPO called Alpha Green-net and under that name engage in various activities around the prefecture to improve the environment and communities.
