Multifunctional Water System in Korean Traditional Garden: The Case of Changdeokgung Palace Garden

The purpose of this study is to find the practical solution for multifunctional water usage in Korean traditional garden. Joseon Dynastys Korean Palace Garden is well known for Korean traditional garden, especially as aesthetic beauty. However in this study, it will deal with scientific water circulation system. A stream of water creates a spring. As water flows through residential space, it circulates the complex process of water-treatment, and then, returns to fill the pond up with it. This is how it works practically even though it cannot be seen outside. Therefore, by postulating the symbolic meaning of water, it becomes not only just elevating humanistic value from it but also treating it as multi-purpose well. It is totally different from Western tradition which utilizes their power to operate the fountain as well as Chinese one which built a large lake to store in. Finally, its expected that this study proposes the possibility to resolve the critical issues which people face in abusing the water usage in contemporary landscape practices.
