The Landscape Planting Design and Culture in Classic Gardens on Yangtze Delta in the Six Dynasties

As the first turning point in the history of Chinese landscape architecture, the Wei and Jin dynasties are also called a key point of Southern-China culture on the Yangtze Delta. The feature of three dominant mainstream types including royal, private and monastery gardens and took a profound effect on the Chinese classical gardens ever after. In this paper, based on literature search on plenty of documents including poetries, history records and local chronicles, accompanied by findings in landscape paintings, research has been done on the planting design theory of royal, private and monastery gardens in Wei and Jin dynasties. This paper focuses on species of plant landscape, patterns of planting communities and structures of plantings spaces, as well as the great influences of the regional culture. 9 characteristics are concluded, including planting scales, space of planting design, planting pattern , establishment of specialized gardens, planting themes, cultural connotation ,plant appreciations in the early time, which would be definitely helpful for finding out the origin of the regional characteristics of Classic garden on the Yangtze Delta.
