Human Responses to Flower Colors of Different Rose (Rosa hybrida) Cultivars

The influence of flower colors on human physiological and psychological response were investigated using different rose cultivars with red, orange, yellow, pink and white flowers. Indices for physiological reactions included blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), oxygen saturation (OS), galvanic skin response (GSR), fingertip pulse (FP) and RR interval, while psychological reactions were tested by profile of mood states (POMS) and state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI). The results showed that flower color stimuli made participants systolic pressure, fingertip pulse, diastolic pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation decrease, while the galvanic skin response raise significantly, which indicated that the participants degree of stress and anxiety reduced, and they felt more relaxed and happier compared with the control group. However, the data didnt prove that the flower color stimuli had effects on the maximum and minimum RR interval. Moreover, participants had more positive psychological responses after the flower color stimuli which were evidenced by lower anger value and fatigue value, lower ratings of anxiety and higher vitality value and self-confidence. However, there were no significant differences among the effects of stimulus of different colors on participants.
