NEMATIC LIQUID CRYSTAL FILM COMPOSED OF FINITE MOLECULAR LAYERS BASED UPON SPATIALLY ANISOTROPIC PAIR POTENTIAL
The nematic liquid crystal film composed of n molecular layers is studied based upon a spatially anisotropic pair potential, which approximately reproduces the elastic free energy density. Two mapping schemes (models) from the elastic free energy to the pair potential are investigated. On condition that the system has the perfect nematic order, the director in the film is isotropic for model I, but the director should stand vertically on the surface plane or lie in the surface plane for model II. By taking account of the temperature, the biaxial order is induced in the surface layers, and symmetry breaking takes place for model I.
