NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS OF A MOVING BOUNDARY PROBLEM IN SOIL HYDROLOGICAL PROCESSES

Two numerical algorithms for an unsaturated and saturated flow problem using the mass-lumped finite element method are given. One is to solve the unsaturated and saturated flow as a moving boundary problem directly. The other is to deduce the moving boundary problem to a fixed boundary problem by a coordinates trans-lation and then to solve the deduced governing equations on the unsaturated area. The two related numerical soil moisture models are coupled with VIC (Variable Infiltration Capacity) land surface model. Comparisons among those numerical groundwater tables and observations are given. It shows that the simulated results agree well with the observations in general and the computational cost of the offline test with the second algorithm is lower than that of the first one.
