A study on characteristic and mechanism of nitrogen and phosphorus removal in a sequencing batch moving bed biofilm reactor

Introduction As showing in the China 2010 State of the environment bulletin, 26 key state-controlled lakes (or reservoirs) were in different levels of eutrophication, in which the main pollutants were nitrogen and phosphorus. The control of nitrogen and phosphorus emission has been a focus in environment field. Various biological nutrient removal (BNR) processes have been applied to wastewater treatment, such as anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A2O), the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) as well as the novel process the sequencing batch moving bed biofilm reactor (SBMBBR), etc. The key to the SBMBBR process is the addition of floating media into the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) tanks, which make SBMBBR can take the dual advantage of SBR and biofilm reactor. Because of the spatial heterogeneity, biofilm will form the aerobic, anaerobic and anoxic zone in the direction of mass transfer, which will provides a good environment for simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal. In this study, SBMBBRs effect of nitrogen and phosphorus removal was compared with conventional SBR, and the interrelated mechanisms were studied from different aspects.
