Air-lift internal loop biofilm reactor for quinoline degradation and ammonium removal
1 Introduction Quinoline, a kind of raw materials for fine chemical manufacturing, is carcinogenic, taraogenic; mutagenic to plants and animals if released into the environment, therefore degradation of quinoline gets increasingly more attention. Among biological methods, degradation of quinoline with biofilm has attracted more attraction, as its series of advantage, such as efficient and stable performance and less surplus sludge. As a kind of nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound, nitrogen atoms bonded in quinoline structure would be released during biodegradation. It should be paid to attention that the released nitrogen during quinoline biodegradation, but study concerned was hardly reported. In this work, an air-lift internal loop biofilm reactor (AL1LBR) was used for biodegradation of quinoline, and nitrogen released was specially paid to attention besides quinoline removal, because nitrogen was one of main contaminants contributed for eutrophication. We try to remove released nitrogen at the same time of removing quinoline fully by using ALILB.
