Artificial neural network modeling and simulation for desalination by reverse osmosis

1. Introduction The prediction of the performance of membrane ultrafiltration has to a significant extent been hampered by the lack of suitable descriptions of the physicochemical phenomena controlling membrane operation. Moreover, the effects of operating conditions on the membrane performance (permeate flux) are non-linear in nature. Therefore, finding an alternative method of predicting permeate flux proves to be a challenges in ultrafiltration processes. The aim of the present paper is to apply ANNs to simulate the crossflow microfiltration using the experimental data, and obtain predictive models based on ANN techniques for prediction of the performance index of RO pilot plant.
