Development of the microbial electrodialysis and chemical production cell for desalination as well as acid and alkali productions

In this study, a four-chamber microbial electrodialysis and chemical-production cell (MEDCC) was developed using bipolar membrane (BPM). Results showed that the pH in the anode chamber of the MEDCC always kept near 7, which greatly enhanced microbial activities in the cell. With the MEDCC, salty water was desalinated without any phosphate leaking, the problem with large pH changes in the anode chamber was resolved, and acid and alkali products were harvested.
