Environmental Impacts Analysis of Process Retrofitting in Sewage Treatment Plants in Wuxi City, China
Introduction In the last decade, process retrofitting in sewage treatment plants (STPs) has been stimulated by the tightened discharge criteria in China. For example, dosing chemical agents and adding advanced treatment processes are often adapted in the reformation of constructed STPs to acquire better nutrient removal. Although the retrofitting ensures higher security for public health and ecological safety, the operational cost, energy and resource consumption and total environmental emissions are elevated after upgrade. Hence, this study the conducted environmental impact analysis before and after the retrofitting by life cycle assessment (LCA) method for three case STPs in Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province of China, to illustrate the impacts of process retrofitting.
