Performance Assessment of Energy and Chemical Saving for Sewage Treatment Plants in Wuxi City, China
Introduction In 2008, process retrofitting in sewage treatment plants (STPs) around Lake Taihu was obligated to meet the currently most strict discharge criteria Grade I-A (GB 18918-2002). As a typical city in the area, Wuxi encountered great challenges to rapidly improve its STP capacities for tertiary treatment. Their pioneering explorations resulted in not only better effluent quality, but also the higher operational cost and resource consumptions. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate their performances on a standard platform to quantify the by-effects of process retrofitting. A comprehensive performance assessment system was established for energy and chemical saving in STPs by former studies, in which standard values and scoring are available for comparison in historic data and regional cases (Yang et al, 2008). In this study, the platform was adapted to evaluate the performances of energy and chemical saving before and after their process retrofitting in three selected STPs in Wuxi City, to conduct regional comparison and propose optimization.
