Platanus orientalis Leaves used as solid carbon source for denitrification
1. Introduction Increased nitrate concentration in city surface water is becoming a serious problem in many countries. Nitrate removal is essential for preventing eutrophication. An essential requirement for the reduction of nitrate is the presence of a carbon source that can be oxidized as an electron donor. Unfortunately, most city surface water lack biodegradable COD which can be efficiently utilized by denitrifying bacteria. The amount of fallen leaf from city roadside trees is huge. For instance, the annual amount of fallen leaf in Shanghai is at least several hundred tons. Those fallen leaf contain lots of organic substance which has potential to be used by denitrifying bacteria as electron donor. In this work, the fallen leaf from Platanus orientalis, commonly known as phoenix tree, was examined the potential to be used carbon source in the process of denitrification.
