Removal of zinc ion from aqueous solutions combined with power generation using the microbial fuel cell
1. introduction Zinc is one of toxic heavy metals, which can result to various health problems, such as stomach cramps, skin irritations, vomiting, nausea, accumulative poisoning, cancer, brain damage (Kalavathy et al, 2010), therefore, the wastewater containing zinc must be treated before discharge. Several methods using to treat heavy metals wastewater have been proposed. Chemical precipitation, ion exchange, reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration and electrodialysis are commonly used to treat wastewater containing heavy metals, however, the high operate cost and energy input limited the application of these methods (Kalavathy et al., 2010; Kurniawan et al, 2006; Lu et al., 2007; Mohammadi et al, 2005).
