The sulfur cycle of biofilm and sediments in sewer system
The corrosion and odor control caused by the sulfur cycle in sewer is important in the sewer operation. The cost to prevent the corrosion and odor can reach the 10% of total sewage treatment cost such as Belgium, Germany. In the past years, many studies focus on the formation mechanism of sulfur cycle in the biofilm of sewer system by lab-scale or field test. The possibility of biological reduction of sulfate and biological or chemical oxidation of sulfide has also been explored in sewer systems. However, the understanding of sulfur cycle process in the sediment biofilm and the feasible control strategy is lack still. In this review, the situ monitoring and molecular biological analysis technologies focus on the sulfur cycle in sewer are discussed.
