UV photolysis coupled with biodegradation for SMX degradation
1. Introduction Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), a kind of synthetic antimicrobial agents, is widely used in the medical field and the aquaculture industry. SMX is also one of typical antibiotics and widely detected in natural environment of China. The SMX degradation efficiency is lower by biological protocol because of its stable chemical properties and biological inhibition. It was reported that SMX structure would be transformed under UV illumination to enhance its biodegradability. But UV-photolysis could only relieve its biological inhibition, and its mineralization degree is still lower. So it is expected to achieve better degradation and mineralization degree by combining the photolysis and biodegradation. In this work, UV photolysis was respectively coupled with biodegradation in sequence and intimate for SMX degradation to increase SMX removal and mineralization degree.
