Evaluation of the nutrient removal, lipids accumulation and soluble algal products genotoxicity of a microalgae strain
1. Introduction In the face of the shortage of water resources and energy crisis, coupling of wastewater advanced purification and high-quality biomass production based on microalgae cultivation has attracted more and more attentions (I i Xin et al. 2009; Hu Hong Ying et al, 2009). The current screening principle of microalgae strain for the coupling process is based on fast growth in the secondary effluent conditions, high removal efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus and high content of lipid by unit (Li Xin et al, 2010). However, little research has been focused on soluble algal products (SAP) production by microalgae cultured in wastewater, particularly the ecological effects of SAP. Here we propose that biological toxicity of SAP is also an essential index in screening of microalgae, taking account of the water quality safety and the ecological effects. The aim of the present work is to clarify the production, composition and genotoxicity of SAP produced by typical alga strain cultivated in second e ffluents of sewage plant. Fractions of SAP were separated by resin fractionation. The genotoxicity of the fractions was evaluated by mutagenic activity assayed with the umu test.
