The application of the soil from the shore of Lake Taihu to alleviate eutrophication: Remove phosphorus and prevent internal phosphorus load
1 Introduction The local soil from the bank of Lake Taihu is one kind of red soil. It is ecologically safe and inexpensive. To our knowledge, red soil can fix P by its high content of iron and aluminium oxides. Even though this kind of soil has a good capacity in P sorption, little is known about its potential in preventing internal phosphorus load. Compared with transitional metal, La has more adsorptive ability for phosphate (Wasay et al, 1996), so La may greatly improve the P adsorptive ability of the local soil. The local soil from Lake Taihu was successfully applied as flocculent together with chitosan to remove cyanobacterial blooms. If the soil can be applied as phosphorus adsorbent, it will be an ecologically-safe, cost-effective materials for the alleviation of lake eutrophication.
