Biodegradation of phenanthrene and arsenite oxidation using a bacterial consortium isolated from aged coking plant
In nature, numerous PAH-contaminated soils accompanied by heavy metals, in particular, arenic are frequently found. The experiment was conducted to evaluate phenanthrene biodegradation and As(III) oxidation capacity of a bacterial consortium FD-3 enriched from an aged coking plant site. More than 40% of phenanthrene and majority of As(III) (>90%) were efficiently removed by FD-3 after 24h incubation. Bacterial consortium FD-3 may therefore play a vital role in treating PAHs and arsenic cocontaminated environments.
