A novel method for simultaneous determination of free chlorine and free bromine in high-salinity water by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry
Ozone is commonly applied in closed artificial seawater (ASW) systems such as aquaria and mariculture facilities as an alternative disinfectant to free chlorine. During ozonation process, chloride and bromide ions, which are commonly present in seawater, can be readily oxidized to free chlorine, free bromine and bromate ions by ozone. Hypohalites in seawater can not only induce respiratory and osmoregulatory dysfunctions in fish but also react with other inorganic or organic compounds to produce harmful byproducts to biota. Thus, it is important to develop a selective and sensitive method to simultaneously determine the concentrations of free chlorine and free bromine in water with high-salinity (e.g, seawater).
