The Study of Water-soluble Brown Carbon in Guangzhou, China
1. Background Brown carbon, a significant fraction of light absorbing carbonaceous aerosols (LAC, mainly including black carbon and light absorbing organic carbon), has a strong characteristic of absorption spectral dependence and exhibits higher absorption towards shorter wavelength especially in the ultraviolet and visible ranges Kirchstetter, et al, 2004. Soluble particles with such properties were first noticed by Patterson and Mcmahon from 1980s, but received little concern during the last 30 years. Recently, studies on brown carbon have become the forefront in the field of atmospheric researches. It was found that high solar radiation absorption by brown carbon is ubiquitous.
