Advanced RTM applications in aircraft
The Resin Transfer Molding process (RTM) has attracted much attention in recent years due to its potential for reducing manufacturing cost. RTM is a matched mould process, where thermosetting resin is injected into a mould containing the reinforcement. RTM is a low and medium volume manufacturing process suitable for large and complex shapes with two defined surfaces. In this paper, the results of a collaborative work between the Department of Astronautic, Electric and Energetic Engineering of the Sapienza University of Rome and CIRA will be presented. The aim of the work was to realize two typical aeronautical structures, currently made by metal alloy. The chosen components are an aerodynamic control surface and a primary structure. They present different critical features to demonstrate the effectiveness of the RTM process for this kind of structures.
