Using Analytical Network Process to Analyze Construction Method Selection in Highway Projects
Construction projects are complex in nature because they typically include more than one, sometimes conflicting, objectives such as time and cost. Sustainable construction requires that environmental impact also be included as a new project objective. With multiple objectives, a contractor needs to know all available alternatives of resources, as well as different project factors affecting the outcome of a project. It is thus important to have a mechanism to consider both the properties of various resource alternatives and the severity of project conditions as the decision of contractors are affected by these parameters. Considering the complexity of the construction projects, the mechanism should be capable of analyzing the dependence between resource properties and project conditions in order to select the most feasible construction method. Analytic network process (ANP) is a powerful tool to structure such a decision problem and handle interactions among construction parameters. The ANP decision model developed in this study used expert opinion from highway construction professionals to reflect the dependency between decision parameters. The initial findings of the study are used to explore the relative importance of a group of project conditions and construction method indicators on the selection of construction methods under time, cost and environmental impact (TCEI) constraints. The progress of the study provides a base for examining the decision-making parameters in highway construction projects when the contractor’s ability to select construction methods is limited by various project constraints.
