A Consideration of Precedence Relationships as Decision Variables in Construction Scheduling Model

Resource-constrained construction scheduling problem (RCSP) is aimed to determine the optimum project resource utilization. The solving process is to shift the start time of activities within their own floating times. The feasible solutions are restricted to maintain all predefined precedence relationships. These relationships are arbitrarily defined by planners themselves and some can be revised according to managerial policies. This research initiates anew RCSP with a capability of reviewing precedence relationships. The new model provides the options of the relationships as decision variables. Therefore, the feasible solution space is expanded and this increases the chance of getting better solutions. The model is developed using Microsoft Excel and Genetic Algorithms (GA) is used for the optimization. The model is also tested with a reference case study. The result shows that the model can improve solutions which give smoother resource utilization profiles and lower resources required. This model can help planners choose suitable relationship options.
