The Development of a Web-Based Construction Claims Management System: End Users’ Requirements
Claims are a fact of life for most construction projects. Although claims may amount to a large sum of money, it is not uncommon to find claims that fail to stand the scrutiny of another party due to poor presentation. This is often characterised by insufficient documentation, missing information and failure to abide by the deadline for submission as stipulated in the contract. This problem is also frequently aggravated by the departure of key personnel responsible for preparing the claims. With developments in information and communication technologies (ICT), it is logical to study what ICT can offer in the management of construction claims. This paper describes the findings from the first stage of a research project that aims to develop a Web-based system to better manage construction claims. Case studies are undertaken with construction companies and professionals in claims to explore in detail the end-users’ requirements for the design of a Web-based construction claims management system, which are discussed and presented in this paper. Further work on the research includes the development of the details of the methodology and the encapsulation of the methodology into a prototype application.
