Strategic Management of Knowledge Chains in AEC Industry

In AECI, Knowledge base is categorized into domain, organizational and project knowledge. Evolution of data to knowledge is through: data-items-identification connecting knowledge patterns, knowledge information relationships along SC; improved context/understanding creating intellectual asset incorporating innovative ideas, principles, processes and mechanisms. Design KM could be strategic-oriented: English Saxon movement or cultural-oriented: Italian movement, both emphasize: creating spaces-places, visual identity, enthusiasm for design. Each is associated with any of the 5 design-processes: linear, divisions, centralized, cycle, and investigative creating knowledge-pool requiring sharing among the stakeholders. The inadequacy in managing tacit-project-knowledge result in fundamental inter-related problems like: Loss of project-knowledge; Unawareness of “which knowledge is available with whom, how to, how much depth leading to reinventing the facts over and over again; Partial knowledge loss due to inadequate knowledge codification. Technology is partially utilized to manage tacit-knowledge as facilitator to initiate sustainable interactions, collaborations and integrations between project-stakeholders. Strategic Knowledge management in AECI helps measurement of project-performance obscuring subjective professional-environment of AECI due to continually/rapidly changing needs with time, in technological, social, economic, professional contexts, collaborative, interactive and integrating conditions and requirements. These characteristics cause low-efficiency/productivity along PDLC. Surveys/experience identifies inclusive/integrated AECI-SC Management with KM to solve major problems of AECIstakeholders. This research argues, AECI needs development of appropriate strategic management systems for effective/efficient Knowledge-Pool creation. Research objective is to study KM in AECI practices, understand how KM happens in project-based multiprofession-environment/associated-challenges; current strategic management practices; role of interactions/collaboration/integrating relationships in KM/policies through effective Integration/collaboration, innovation/Design-Development Management; in AECI-SC, review current Management issues and highlight potential KM research.
