Development of Affordable Cluster Houses of Amphibian Nature

India with a coastline of total 7517 km and numerous rivers is exposed to the hazard of flood that claims hundreds of lives every year. The reason lies with the rising sea level due to global warming and falling capacity of river basin due to increasing number of dams to cater agricultural and hydraulic power requirement. Hence it is of paramount interest to develop technology for flood-resistant structures to house people especially the poor one living in vulnerable shelter bordering the waterline. ACCCRN (Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network) program has initiated cluster housing for flood prone areas of Surat in western India. However, the easiest solution of stilted house was discarded in this case with intermittent water logging because such house detaches the habitants from their normal community level network for a considerable amount of time when there is no flooding. This research proposes amphibian housing model suitable for dry and water-logged environment. Unlike the Dutch or American examples, the scheme is made cost effective by using two pronged approach, namely, space planning and material selection. Thoughtful planning reduced length of wall, grouped services and employed precast modular units. Lightweight material such as extended polystyrene foam (EPS) or shingles made the structure lightweight. Also common foundation for the housing cluster reduced the amount of buoyant material compared to individual foundation. Two types of houses are developed with plinth areas 44.6 sq.m. and 22 sq.m. The proposed amphibian concept is expected to be extended to bigger houses and at community level where the roads can also float along with the basic services.

ACCCRN buoyancy EPS flood-resistant lightweight construction.
