PROCESSING MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE WASTE WATER BY IMMOBILIZED MONASCUS

Vast monosodium glutamate wastewater was produced by monosodium glutamate industry in China every year. This wastewater has high levels of Chemical oxygen demand (>40 000 mg/L), and is very difficult for treatment In this study, degradation of MSGW with Monascus strain HNG-1 was firstly carried out The effects of various operation parameters namely wastewater concentrations, culture time and porous biomass carriers on maximum percentage of degradation of wastewater were investigated. Results showed that COD removal efficiencies of 54%~64% were observed for porous biomass carriers applied compare to 7% —20% for blank test. The porous biomass carrier has specific surface of 100 m2/g and wastewater concentration diluted by 10% were optimum. Monascus immobilized by porous carriers possesses great potential and economic advantages in MSGW treatment.
