Implementation and Microbial Community Analysis of a Sediment Microbial Fuel Cell

This work was conducted to implement a sediment microbial fuel cell (SMFC) and examine the composition and electrochemical activity of the bacterial community. Fingerprinting analysis of the bacterial 16S rDNA gene fragment was done by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis. The sequence retrieved from samples of the SMFC. The benthic microbial fuel cell operated with River Qinhuai sediments presented a low power density (10 mW/m2) indicating that further work is required to optimise its power generation.
