Cyanobacteria as novel plant growth promoting and biocontrol options - metabolites, genes and cross talk with plants
Cyanobacteria represent a remarkable group of photosynthetic prokaryotes, whose ubiquity and diversity is unparalled in the microbial world. Although the role of cyanobacteria is well established as nitrogen supplements for rice, their taxonomic and functional diversity in the rhizosphere of rice and wheat crops is less explored. Generally considered to be obligate phototrophs, our investigations with samples from the rhizosphere of rice and wheat plants from diverse agroecologies of India, revealed interesting facets regarding their genetic diversity and production of bioactive metabolites. Efforts were made to utilize these cyanobacterial isolates
