A Study of a Precision Soft-Landing Technique for Human Spacecraft Using a Ram-Air Parachute in Atmospheric Wind Conditions
A ram-air parachute, a sort of inflatable wing, has many advantages for the gliding and soft landing of payloads. To apply the ram-air parachute to use in human spacecraft, precision targeting and a soft-landing capability under atmospheric wind conditions need to be secured. However, structural flexibility and non-linearity of the ram-air parachute make it difficult to apply to a kinematic approach for precision targeting and landing. On the other hand, ram-air parachutes are widely used in sports such as skydiving and paragliding, and veteran pilots of skydiving and paragliding have their own unique techniques to achieve accurate targeting and soft landings. Therefore, we applied the results of observations of their gliding and landing techniques to the soft landing and trajectory planning methodologies of autonomous control and confirmed the validity of the approach.
