Measurement of Rotor Blade Motion using SPR Method

This paper deals with the measurement of blade motion using Stereo Pattern Recognition (SPR) method which is a kind of non-contact optical shape estimation methods. An SPR system with IR cameras was set up to measure rotor blade motions. The measurement uncertainty of the system was about 0.21mm, 0.15mm, 0.21° for the lead-lag, flapping, and pitching motions, respectively. A demonstration for the performance of blade motion measurement was performed with a small articulated rotor system (360rpm, diameter 1.4m). 3-D position data of 55 markers attached on the rotor were measured with 192Hz sampling rate. All lead-lag, flapping, and pitching motions were successfully acquired at every 1° azimuth angle through data processing. After verifying a good performance of rotating blade measurement, the SPR system was applied to measuring the blade motions of a hingeless rotor system with a diameter 2.13m located at Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). The blade motions with respect to azimuth angle and radial position were successfully measured under the conditions of 360rpm or 589rpm rotating speed, and 0°, 4°, or 6° collective pitch angle.
