A Study on Multi-Functional Structure Using Rectangular Grid Structure

The critical point of the general MFS (Multi-Functional Structure) technology is the replacement of the bulky electrical chassis/frames, PWBs (Printed-Wiring Boards), cables and connectors with MCMs (Multi-Chip Modules), which require much costs and efforts for developing. The copper polyimide circuit skin with the MCMs is bonded on the composite honeycomb sandwich panel with embedded or laminated thermal control elements. This paper shows the new MFS concept, which effectively saves the volume and weight, without the MCMs. The structure including the thermal control and radiation shielding elements will be designed and manufactured as the composite rectangular grid-stiffened structure. The rectangular grid-stiffened structure provides the enough spaces for the PWBs without the chassis/frames.
