An Automatic GUI Adjustment Method for Head Mounted Display
A variety of display devices such as LCD screens, Head Mounted Displays (HMDs) are becoming more prevalent in our daily use. The display field of view (FOV) and image characteristics vary widely between these devices, influencing the look and feel of GUI content as it shown. This can significantly affects user visual/motor performance and perceptual abilities such as GUI content size. In this paper, we propose a method for automatically adjusting the GUI content size during connection of HMDs, such that performance of pointing tasks is maintained. Firstly, we propose an algorithm to find out how to scale the GUI content size from a LCD to a HMD crossing different display FOVs and resolutions. Secondly, we use a Fitts pointing task to determine a critical size, which reflects in what condition the GUI content is too small for interacting with. Thirdly, we discuss a work-in-progress hardware prototype which we are building to implement and to evaluate this method.
