New control methodology for Intelligent Universal Transformers in Advanced Distribution Automation based on two PI controllers in Input-Output stages

Intelligent Universal Transformer (IUT) is one of the Intelligent Electronic Devices with new technology for evolving the Advanced Distribution Automation (ADA) in future. ADA is the state of art with flexible electrical network of component and open communication architecture comprise the Future Distribution System. IUT is a power electronic base transformer employs new high voltage-low current solid-State devices like SGTO. Size and weight reduction, oil pollution elimination and maintenance free equipment are the advantages due to HV oil free transformer utilization in IUT. In this approach ADA concept, IUT basic operation, four layers IUT topology comprising rectifiers, inverters, DC bus capacitors in input stage, high frequency transformer in insulation stage, rectifiers, filters and inverters in output stage will be discussed. Main and auxiliary inverters provide two 240V AC 60 HZ and 120V AC 400 HZ for communication usage. DC/DC converter produces a new 48V DC service option. PI current source controller in input stage senses the Input current and prevents harmonic distortion. PI voltage source controller in output leads to constant voltage and improve the performances under load and source disturbances. Automatic sag correction, DC voltage option, real time voltage regulation, reliable diverse power as 400Hz service, three-phase power from a single phase line, Harmonic Filtering, Flicker mitigation, options for energy storage and dynamic system monitoring are the resulting benefits of this model.
