Ruoergai Peatlands Conservation and Restoration
China has a large area of peatlands with different types. It is estimated over 5,000 km2 in Ruoergai marshes, situated at the eastern edge of QinghaiTibetan Plateau where one of the five biggest grassland in China. It supports the ecological functions and social economic values for local community. But the peat resource has been seriously destroyed by over-exploration by the human beings. The main threats to the peatlands include mining,overgrazing,drainage etc. The peatlands was degraded, biodiversity lost with characteristics of water level decreasing, water erosion worsening and desertification intensified. Therefore,urgent measures should be taken to tackle these issues. The activities around peatlands conservation in Ruoergai high altitude are conducted: a) recognition of the peatlands functions and values especially to the decision mak-ers; b) workshops organized; c) techniques of restoration peatlands identified combing overseas techniques,experiences and local conditions; e) implementation of restoration with local stake-holders; g) monitoring and assessment following the restoration.
